Embracing Our Legacy: The Westport Historical Society

The Westport Historical Society is dedicated to preserving, interpreting, and celebrating the historical narratives that have shaped our community. Founded in 1950 and incorporated as a tax-exempt non-profit in 1964, the Westport Historical Society was established to protect the heritage of Westport, the Town of Kansas, early Kansas City, and our founders.

Our organization has evolved from a group of passionate history enthusiasts into a key institution engaging the broader Kansas City area, playing a vital role in the community’s historical preservation and education.

Enhancing Our Historical Landscape: The Creation of Pioneer Park

In our mission to enrich and preserve our historical legacy, the Westport Historical Society, in partnership with the Native Sons of Kansas City, embarked on a special project to develop Pioneer Park. Located just a short stroll from the 1855 Harris-Kearney House at the intersection of Westport Road and Broadway, Pioneer Park features a striking bronze monument honoring our city’s founders, Alexander Majors, John Calvin McCoy, and James Bridger. Additionally, a detailed terrazzo map marks the historic junction of the Santa Fe, Oregon, and California Trails, making the park a vibrant educational landmark.
