SUMMARY:Priest of Pallas Collector's Reception
DESCRIPTION:Cordially invited are serious collectors or lovers of “keepsakes” and artifacts from week-long Priests of Pallas festivals between 1887 through 1912\, in Kansas City. The festival was designed to promote Kansas City as the “Athens of the West” to coincide in October with the harvest season\, and be based loosely on similar celebrations such as Mardi Gras in New Orleans. \nThis official meeting of Priests of Pallas Collectors is being held at the Harris/Kearney House at 4000 Baltimore Avenue\, Kansas City\, Mo. 64111 where an exhibit of many private collector’s items and those shared with us by other great organizations’ who support us\, are on display through June 30th. \nComplimentary refreshments will be provided with your registration\, to ensure the right amount will serve all who attend. You are welcome to bring along your pieces or just drop by to visit the exhibit and meet fellow collectors. \nThe photo was taken at the home of former WHS President Steven Knoll and his wife Marianne\, when Steve and Ryland Foster\, WHS board member and Exhibit Director\, were discussing the Noll’s P.O.P. collection. Steve is also the former president of the Jackson County Historical Society and a passionate collector of Kansas City history. The conversations were truly fun so this event will be something you don’t want to miss. \nWestport Historical Society wishes to acknowledge the collaborative effort of groups and individuals who have made the exhibit possible. WHS is offering special thanks for help\, and loans of various historical artifacts and photographs to the following: \n\nJackson County (Missouri) Historical Society\nMissouri Valley Special Collections\, Kansas City Public Library\, Downtown KC\nWonderland Vintage\, Alan Dunham and Andy Chambers\nRyland E. SUMMARY:GALLERY EXHIBIT: Documenting History - Behind the Scenes at the 1855 Harris-Kearney House
DESCRIPTION:Documenting History: Behind the Scenes at the Harris-Kearney House will break open the boundary of what an exhibit is and turn it into a working exhibit space to document and inventory the Westport Historical Society’s collection. \nDocumenting museum collections is essential for preserving\, managing\, and understanding the cultural\, historical\, or artistic value of the objects held in a museum. Proper documentation creates a permanent record of each item\, including its origin\, condition\, ownership history (provenance)\, materials\, dimensions\, labeling and photographs. This information not only protects the museum’s intellectual and legal rights but also supports research\, education\, and public engagement. \nAn inventory is a systematic process of verifying and recording the presence\, condition and location of all items in a collection. It serves as a snapshot of the collection at a given time and ensures that records match the physical holdings. All of this will take place as a constantly changing exhibit where the behind the scenes comes front and center. \nDuring the course of the exhibit\, updates will be posted on our Facebook page with examples processing the various artifacts and other items in the collection. \nExhibit HOURS\n\n Saturdays and Sundays: 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm\n\nCheck the website for special date closings for the museum house.\n\n\nOr by appointment for individuals or groups\n\nFees\nThe fee to see the exhibit in our upper gallery (2nd floor) is included in your Museum House Admission and Tour Ticket. Tickets are payable with a credit card or PayPal\, either at the door or in advance\,  HERE.  Additional donations are welcome as they offset the expense of the exhibit. There is no fee for Current Westport Historical Society members. \nAcknowledgements\nWestport Historical Society wishes to acknowledge the collaborative effort of groups and individuals who have made the exhibit possible. WHS is offering special thanks for all the volunteer help the following individuals are providing. SUMMARY:POSTPONED New Date TBD - Wood-Wheeled Vehicles Across the Frontier
DESCRIPTION:Wood-Wheeled Vehicles Across the Frontier \nThe 1800s were a time of remarkable change in the making of America\, and few forces shaped the nation more profoundly than transportation. From cowboys and homesteaders to miners\, soldiers\, merchants\, and families seeking new opportunities in the West\, wooden wagons\, buggies\, and stagecoaches carried ambition\, hardship\, determination\, and hope across a rugged and often unforgiving frontier. \nIn this engaging one-hour presentation\, “Wood-Wheeled Vehicles Across the Frontier\,” guests will discover the largely forgotten story of America’s early transportation industry—its vehicle makers\, innovations\, challenges\, and enduring craftsmanship. Presented in recognition of the United States’ 250th anniversary\, offers a fascinating look at the vehicles that helped propel westward expansion and shape the American story. \nFollowing the presentation\, participants will walk next door to the grounds of the 1855 Harris-Kearney Museum House for lemonade and cookies while viewing the surviving front axle and wheels from the historic covered wagon that stood at the corner of Westport Road and Southwest Trafficway from 1962 through 2024. \n          \nThere\, presenter David Sneed will continue the program with an interactive discussion of the artifact’s unique features\, explaining how details of its construction reveal where and when the wagon was manufactured and what they tell us about its history. Guests will have ample opportunity to ask questions and discuss wood-wheeled vehicles of the nineteenth century. Attendees are encouraged to bring photographs for discussion of farm\, freight\, ranch\, coach\, business\, and military vehicles that traversed America’s roads\, trails\, and frontier during the 1800s and early 1900s\, when horse power ruled transportation. \n \nKnown for his commitment to historical accuracy\, Sneed has spent decades researching and documenting America’s wood-wheeled transportation heritage. His expertise has been sought by private collectors\, historical organizations\, museums\, corporations\, and media productions seeking to identify historic vehicles\, trace their origins\, establish manufacturing timeframes\, and uncover long-forgotten stories. Drawing upon extensive research\, archival resources\, and hands-on experience\, he will share insights into the innovations\, craftsmanship\, brands\, and technologies that helped build one of America’s most influential yet often overlooked industries. \nWhether you are interested in frontier history\, transportation\, craftsmanship\, genealogy\, or the American West\, this unique program offers a rare opportunity to learn from one of the nation’s leading authorities on historic wood-wheeled vehicles and the vital role they played in shaping the nation. \nJoin us for this afternoon of fun\, refreshments\, and connections with the past. We asked everyone to sign up\, please\, so we have enough refreshments for everyone. All ages are welcome and there is no charge to attend. \n
